How To Apply Ultra High Bond Double Sided Acrylic Foam Tape

Cleaning Instructions for Ultra High Bond Tape:

Cleaning: Surface preparation is an important stage of applying Ultra High Bond Tape. To clean your light and medium contaminated substrates, Omni offers the Silver Clean. When cleaning your surface, a paper towel and alcohol solution is suitable. Wipe the substrate in one direction using the one-cloth method (one cloth with cleaner) or a two-cloth method (one cloth with cleaner and one dry cloth to follow) is acceptable if you are short on time. Repeat these steps until your cloth is clean and free of any contaminants. For heavily contaminated substrates, use a cleaning agent such as MEK, Heptan, or Acetone. These cleaning agents may leave a residue which would have to be removed using the IPA cleaner.

You can clean your substrates using the one cloth method; one light-colored paper towel drenched in cleaner. Or, if you are short on time, use the two-cloth method; one light-colored paper towel drenched in cleaner,  followed by one dry light colored paper towel.

Abrading: When bonding UHB tape to raw aluminum, abrading of the surface is a must. The oils used in the waltzing of the aluminum are pressed into the pores of the material. To remove these oils, that will influence the bond, we recommend using the Silver Pads. These abrasive pads ensure the proper level of abrasion without damaging your substrates. Besides raw aluminum, abrading is a method utilized to help improve your bond of the double sided UHB tape. After the abrasion process is completed, remove any residue using an IPA cleaner following the methods mentioned above

Primer: The use of a primer is recommended when bonding UHB tape to some low surface energy substrates. Examples include different types of polymers, powder-coated metals, or porous materials such as wood, cork, stone, or concrete. Primers are also used to help speed up your production process. The Omni Ultra High Foam Bonding Tape line can take up to 72 hours to reach its end strength. The use of a primer ensures the end strength will be achieved within 20 minutes.

Omni offers two primers; the primer 33 and the primer 101. Determining which one of these primers is suitable for your application ultimately depends on the substrates and environmental influences. Your technical support will gladly advise you which primer to use.

Application Instructions for UHB Tape

After the primer is completely dry, the Double Sided Foam Bonding Tape can be applied on the substrate. Position the UHB tape on the material and apply light pressure by pushing the thumb over the liner. Make sure that the air between the foam bonding tape and the material is removed.

Pressure on Application
Omni double sided ultra high bonding tapes have pressure-sensitive adhesives. Therefore, a minimum amount of pressure is required on the bond line to ensure maximum adhesion to your substrates. This pressure should be applied in a rolling fashion. A hand roller or mechanical presser is the preferred method. The pressure on the bond line must be a minimum of at least 10N/cm².

Double Sided Tape Liner Removal
To remove the liners from the ultra high bond tape we recommend the use of either a knife, scissors, or a fine brush.

Cleaners & Primers for Double Sided Foam Bonding Tape:

To achieve the perfect bond, surface preparation is a must. The Primers 33 and 101 will help you to reach this by offering excellent cleaning and priming characteristics.

Silver Clean: The Silver Clean is an isopropanol /alcohol mixture (IPA). This cleaner has excellent degreasing capabilities and is, due to its volatile nature, extremely suitable for time-critical applications which many of our and our customers’, applications are. Silver Clean is suitable for light to medium-contaminated materials. Grease, dust, oils, etc. are easily removed by this cleaner. In case of high contamination levels, Omni advises a more aggressive cleaner like MEK, Heptan, or Acetone. The principles of door production are basically the same; a panel (composite, wood, plastic, etc.,) is bonded to a steel or aluminum frame.

Silver Clean pre-drenched  IPA cleaner towels: No more bottles of cleaner, no more spills, easy to use, less waste. Some of the advantages of the new Silver Clean pre-drenched towels. The mixture of 96% Isopropyl Alcohol and 4% Deionized Water ensures the level of cleaning needed for the use of the Silver Tapes. The standard packages contain 100 towels. The polyester cellulose nonwoven towels are 153mm x 216mm in size and are absolutely lint-free to prevent contamination of your bonding surface.

Primer 101UV and 201 – Applying for Double Sided Ultra High Bond Tape to Glass: To complete the range of primers, we now offer the Omni Primer 101UV, which is the standard 101 primer with a UV tracer to check the use of primer in the production process. Besides this, we also offer the Primer 201, a silane primer, especially for the bonding of glass. Because of the hydrophilic characteristics of glass, the microscopic pores of the glass are filled with this primer to effectuate the best substrate for bonding.

Primers 33 & 101 – Applying UHB Tape to Panels
Omni Primers are designed to work in conjunction with acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive systems. When used correctly, adhesion promoters become a thin film on the surface of the material on which it is applied. The film anchors itself onto the material surface. The surface energy of this film is typically higher than the material to which the adhesion promoter is applied. The higher the surface energy level, the better the bond of the pressure-sensitive adhesive. The adhesion promoters are compatible with Omni’s ultra high bond acrylic foam tapes.

With the use of UHB Tape, these noises are minimized or eliminated altogether. Besides this, you can imagine that aesthetics are very important to these manufacturers as well.  Applications in this industry are floor, wall, and ceiling panels as well as lighting and instrument panels.

Application Tools for UHB Tape:

A range of tape applicators, laminators, and pressers are avaliable for apply UHB tape.  An example is shown in the drawing/picture above. The hand laminator tool can also be fitted onto a fixture for in-line UHB tape application and can be adjusted for the use of slit or spool rolls. Besides these applicators, any kind of custom-made equipment is available at our customers’ request.
